Checking and Adding Brake Fluid

To help avoid brake failure, check and refill fluid at least once a year. Of course, if brakes aren’t performing correctly, make sure to check the fluid also. Five simple steps follow. Consult your Owner’s Guide for more information. See Glove Box Manuals to download a copy of your vehicle Owner’s Guide.

  1. Open hood and locate brake fluid cap.
  2. Wipe off cap with rag (to prevent debris from falling into fluid) and remove – dirty brake fluid can damage the hydraulic brake system.
  3. Visually inspect fluid level.
  4. If necessary, add brake fluid until level reaches MAX line. Do not overfill. Be careful–brake fluid is not only toxic, it also will damage your car’s finish if spilled.
  5. Important: Refer to your vehicle Owner’s Guide for the proper brake fluid grade. See Glove Box Manuals to download a copy of your vehicle’s Owner’s Guide.
  6. Replace cap.
