Brake Service
Your brakes are one of the most critical safety components on
your vehicle. Keeping them in good working order is essential. The type of
service they may need will depend mostly on their level of wear.
Symptoms of Bad or Worn Brakes
Have your brakes inspected immediately if you notice:
- Squeaks
Some squeaks are normal, but if they become louder and more frequent you
should have your brakes inspected.
- Grinding
This sound could mean your brake pads may have worn through.
- Low brake pedal
This could mean there’s a leak or air in the hydraulic system, or
that your brake shoes are out of adjustment.
Brake Inspections
If you notice any of the above symptoms, have a Genuine
Service technician check it out. Also, you should have your brake fluid
level checked at least every 5,000 miles, and a thorough brake inspection
at least every 15,000 miles.
What Brake Service Entails
The three primary types of brake service are:
- Replacement of brake pads and/or shoes
- Replacement of brake pads and/or shoes and “turning”
of rotors and drums
- Replacement of brake pads and/or shoes and replacement of rotors
and drums
Repairs Commonly Associated with Brake Service
With all brake service, your brake’s hydraulic system
should be checked and repaired, if necessary. This may involve repairing or
replacing brake hoses, brake calipers, brake booster, brake master cylinder
and brake wheel cylinders.
